Guide School

Bill McBurney's Guide Training Course is for those interested in being a Guide.  It is so well rounded that it cannot be surpassed by any other other guide school in the West.  Why?

An area of concern for Bill is when an outfitter takes nothing more than your $$$$.  With Bill, you will be ready to be a guide that is effective and knowledgeable in 4 weeks.

Of course that depends on what "you" already know about fishing.  If you love the outdoors and you have the persona to work with  the public, Guiding can be the career business for you.

Bill teaches character, attitude and even showmanship.  This is a great part of being a "great guide".  He includes the do's and dont's of starting your own business and operation of boats.  This is all done "hands on" with Ambassador Guide clients.

Before pursuing this career change, consider the following.

What requirements are Federally and State required to Guide:

Coast Guard Licensing: $700.00
Local Guides License : $100
Insurances: Company Liability and Commercial Transportation Insurance

Under Bill's instruction, you will learn what equipment is necessary (boats, fly rods, spin and baite cast.  Bill will work with each individual on his or her own talents.

The Instructor

Master Hunting and Fishing Guide Bill McBurney for over 30 years has been working in this industry.  As the primary instructor for the 4 week hands on course, his credentials are  extensive and so are his clients list.  He has been featured on numerous Outdoor shows including his own Ambassador Outdoors on the Sportsman's Channel 2006.

"Being a success at what you do is not limiting yourself to just a limited task"

Bill McBurney

The Course:

June 1 through June 30, 2007

July 1 through July 31, 2007

August 1 through 31, 2007

The students will be instructed on all aspects of his guiding business which will include:

  • Marketing
  • Skills on all types of fishing
  • Boat operation
  • Maintenace of your equipment
  • Safety

Many guides come out of schools and have no idea how to change a wheel bearing on that boat when you are 50-100 miles from nowhere or the water pump is broken, what do you do.  There is so much you have to know to really be in the business.

Students will learn to operate a River Jet Boat at the headwaters to the Grand Canyon and the operating techniques of Lake Powell on beautiful Lake Powell.

Instruction will include catching on Fly Fishing, Baite Casting, Spin Fishing and trolling techniques will all be covered so that the student can apply to a variety of Guide opportunities

Master Guides are very limited to a specific way that fits the area they want to work in.  The student can tailor most of the training needed if desired and with Bills' expertise in Salt Water fly fishing he can introduce the student to that aspect with saltwater hybrid stripers on Lake Powell along with large and smallmouth & walleye which will be covered.

While in Page, you can enjoy a round of golf, take a side trip to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon or enjoy another day fishing scenic Lake Powell.  Recommend bring your camera or video recorder so your guide can capture the moment for you while you fish.

The course will run 4 weeks and will be 5 days on and 2 days off.  This will allow for personal time for the student.

What to Bring:

  • waders/boots

  • polarized sunglasses

  • AZ Game & Fish license for Lake & River

  • rain gear

  • camera

  • hat

  • Personal Rods (check with instructor prior)

  • sunblock

A deposit of $150 to register is non-refundable and it applies to the tuition cost.  50% is required 90 days prior to arrival and the balance due upon arrival.  There are no refunds for students who leave the 4 week course early due to change of mind on their part in wanting to finish the course or for being asked to leave due to disruptive behavior.  If the student has to leave the course due to medical or family hardship, they will be allowed to return at a future date to complete the course.  A certificate of insurance is required before arrival and a medical waiver for any one 18-21 from their guardian.  If the student in is taking any medication, it needs to be declared to the office prior to arrival.
